Blogs are a great way to promote your magazine and engage with your readers. Great, I hear you say ... but what do I actually write about?
Ten Blog Post Ideas for Magazine Owners

Help is at hand however, with my top ten list of ideas to get you started. Before you put pen to paper or start frantically typing, sit back and think about content that you may already have. Writing a good blog post is not a five-minute job, but totally worth the effort. Once your blog post is finished and published, you can re-purpose the content in many ways. For instance, a link can be added to your next newsletter, you can mention some of the key points on your social media (with links), create a live video or even a podcast.

Let’s get started… but keep in mind the following:

  • stay on topic – keep the title in mind and stick to it
  • keep reader-friendly with subheadings and short paragraphs
  • add natural breaks with images, bullet points and lists
  • follow up with a ‘what to do next?’ This could be a link to further information or a downloadable info sheet.

#1. New products or services

Blogs are a great way to announce a product launch or a new service. You can write about the idea behind it, show how it was made and even video a demonstration using the product or service. Your post can also discuss the features and benefits and not forgetting the most important aspect; what problem does it solve for your readers. Adding a couple of reviews to your post is another great option.

#2. Events

You can write about the events that you are running or shows that may interest your readers. These types of blogs are a great way to inform your readers with detailed information on how to book, pricing and location. If it was your own event, you could include behind-the-scenes images, interviews and how it was planned, followed up with images from the event or show.

#3. Industry trends

It’s good to keep up with the latest trends to share with your audience and shows that you are up-to-date with your industry. You could also link up with companies and services, that offer products and services aligned with your industry. You just need to contact their marketing department and ask to receive their latest press releases. You could also link these blog posts with a product or service review.

#4. Reader success stories

Maybe a reader has won an award or increased their business potential by being published in your magazine. These are great stories to share with your readers.

#5. Product or service reviews

Whatever your magazine topic, there will be new products and services that can be reviewed. You (or a reader) could test the product or service and write a review. You could get started with products or services that you or the team already use. Another option is to become an affiliate or write a sponsored post for a product or service.

A good example of a review would be a post I wrote about SiteGround and a review of the Rotolight Anova Pro2 by a PHOTOSHOOT magazine contributor.

#6. Behind the scenes

Your readers will love finding out what goes on behind the scenes with your magazine and especially you as an editor. Depending on your team members, you could also ask them to write blog posts about what they do, especially if they cover events and interviews.

A great example of this is my ‘Editor’s diary’ and on my own social media accounts.
We sometimes extend PHOTOSHOOTs magazine articles to a blog post. As contributors may send over some great behind-the-scenes images, that we cannot squeeze into the printed issue.

#7. Charity work

You or your magazine may be linked to a local or national charity, aligned with your values or magazine niche. This partnership works really well for great stories and highlights their charity work. For example, if your magazine is about cats, then being connected with a cat charity would work really well. You could not only post updates, but help them re-home or maybe help with getting donations. You would also have lots of cat images to use.

PHOTOSHOOT worked with a local charity called Alex Angels and helped out at events. We also responded to a local radio, seeking help for a terminally ill young lady, whose final wish was to marry her sweetheart. All the PHOTOSHOOT editorial team attended the day and helped to make special memories.

#8. Competitions

Blogs are great to promote competitions and gives you great content with before, during and the results. Product giveaways can also link in with an advertorial or article. If your readers win tickets for an event, ask them to take pictures with a little write-up for you or take pictures using the product or service that they won.

Following our front cover competitions, we wrote a post of the ten winners of our first competition with Photocrowd. This was a nice way to thank the top ten for their effort and makes a good article to promote everyone involved.

#9. Reader polls

Polls are great to engage with your readers but also seek valuable feedback about your magazine, products, services and ways to implement other ideas. Readers love short surveys, as they feel that they have a voice and part of your future plans.



#10. How-to information

Blog posts that offer ‘how-to’ information, especially with a free printable or PDF to download are another great way to engage with your readers and attract newcomers to join your newsletter. You can include quizzes, lists, link libraries, resource packs and educational worksheets.
