Working from home – the good, the bad and the ugly

NEEDS WORKING ON

The good.

You can sit and work in your pyjamas.

You can make a cup of tea or coffee and eat when you want.

You can have as many breaks as you want.

You can mix business and personal

You can make personal phone calls business phone calls.

You can start your diary out and go to a dentist appointment or have your hair done at any time of the day you’re not restricted to before or after work, or lunch hours.

You can start work when you like, you can finish work when you like, you can get up really early and do a chunk of hours, take the kids to school, go to the gym.

Come back to a bit more work have lungi so you can really break your days up to suit your lifestyle. You know when you if you’ve got children you can pick them up, and you could sort them out for a few hours, you know, so you can really really manipulate your work time.

You can take on as much or as little work as you want.

You can go on holiday, when you want.

you can have long weekends.

When you want.

You can have long coffees with your mates, or long lunches. You can choose the hours, if you’re working. If you’re working off site so if you’re working at a client’s, you can put what days are best to avoid traffic rush hours, or you know, arrange to go somewhere where it’s cheaper fares.

So you can really work around to suit yourself.

The bad

Very easy to procrastinate. It’s hard when there’s when it’s a beautiful day.

You want to maybe go outside.

It’s hard when you get very busy. You might end up working longer hours. Then that might be your taking on the wrong type of work.

Sitting in your pyjamas can create a sense of not working and you don’t feel like you’re working.

You might spend more time then you should with longer lunches. You know, you don’t have to get back unless there’s something urgent. You end up working, maybe a lot longer hours than you planned at the very start of your self, your work from home journey.

You have to be really organised and really stay on track and plan.

As we know, with restrictions.

If your business relies on being at an office or working with people that could become a problem, as we know, and if you don’t work you lose money. You have no money.

You go on holiday. You don’t get holiday pay.

You are ill, you don’t get sick pay unless you have insurances in place, which obviously if it’s a long term sickness or accident that is quite important to have in place. I had a situation where my daughter, my oldest daughter. It could have been quite serious, she was. She had a very rare condition that affected the eye is the nurse behind her eye. And that involves six months of in and out of the hospital. Going to hospital appointments. And I was actually employed full time. And they paid me, you know they covered that. So, I was lucky. But, you know, Stan that we can hospital if you are self employed, because I had to stay with my daughter. You know, I would have lost money. Because my work then was face to face. Now, um, I could. It wouldn’t be ideal. And actually, I was, if I had a digital arm to my business. I could have. What in the hospital. Yes. If I had a Wi Fi hotspot I could have worked in the hospital. If I had a job where I had an evergreen product that was of course, then obviously, I would be earning money while I was there. So, I am a real strong believer of having a few different arms to a business right now. You know, because as we know in a blink of an eye, it could all change. And what I didn’t anticipate is how much I would be disturbed. When I had children at home. When I was trying to work for myself. So, Obviously if you have young children. You know, you still might to have might have to have some form of a care programme in place, because it is almost impossible. So the idea of sitting there you know with your laptop and phone. Whilst trying to work will not work. Even when I was full time and say I picked my children up from school and got home, I knew that I had to carry on working for a couple more hours. If I had to make an urgent phone call I literally had to make sure that everybody was happy, everybody was sorted out. And that they were not to disturb me unless they was on fire. Because, mommy was making a very important phone call, so please do not argue with each other. Here’s Barney, watch Barney for 20 minutes, so I had to plan, making a quick phone call, because that’s life. And you really need to go into this with your eyes wide open. If you do have young children because they don’t mix. So, you know, have a care programme in place.
